Now…
We made love two more times before we both passed out on the loveseat, me with my body sprawled across it, feet on the floor, Nicky curled up on top of me. I woke up first and could tell from the way the sun streamed through the blinds on the huge living room window that it was early afternoon. I smiled down at Nicky as I rubbed my hand over her bare shoulder. She was still here. It wasn’t a dream, and my damn heart felt like it was about to burst. I had wished for this, wanted it for so long, it became like that dream people have for their lives that they know is nowhere within their reach. The ultimate fantasy, the if-the-planets-align-perfectly-and-a-miracle-happens fantasy. The improbable fantasy. Nicky was that for me.
And now she was here…with me.
She was mine.
Finally, mine.
She stirred, stretched on my body, then lifted her head and smiled at me. Looked into my eyes, and said, “Forever.”
I returned her smile. “And ever.”
When we used to say that to each other as kids, we were referencing our friendship. Now those words solidified our love.
“I love you,” I said, as I kissed her forehead.
She gave me another smile. “I love you, too.” Resting her head on my chest again, she sighed. “I could lay here with you like this until the end of time.”
“Hmm, me too. But your stomach keeps growling, so I think I should get up and feed you.”
“My stomach is not—” She was interrupted by a rumble so loud, she started giggling. “Shit, I guess I am hungry.”
I laughed. “I really put it on you, didn’t I? Got you all hungry and shit.” Before I could finish that statement, my stomach growled.
Nicky burst out laughing. “Who put what on whom, huh?”
Still grinning like a fool, I said, “I’m just hungry from all the energy I used dicking you down.”
“Whatever! You act like I didn’t do any work.”
“Oh, you put in some work. You gon’ put in some more, too, because—”
Boom! Boom! Boom!
We both jumped. Nicky actually jumped off of me and stood naked in the middle of my living room.
“Damon? You in there?!” It was Angie. For a second, I thought Travis had seen Nicky’s car in the driveway and was coming to start some shit about the canceled wedding. My ass was going to gladly finish it.
Nicky’s eyes searched the floor, and then she grabbed my t-shirt and pulled it over her head. As I pulled on my sweats, I said, “Really?”
She shrugged before reaching up and kissing my cheek.
I shook my head as I walked over to the door and cracked it open. “Hey, Ang. ‘Sup?”
She tried to glance behind me. “Uh, I see Nicky’s car out here. Is she okay?”
“Yeah, sorry about the noise…uh, my bad. She’s good, though.”
She cocked her head to the side and rolled her eyes. “Fool, I’m not talking about you two in here screwing like a couple of wild hyenas, although that’s…disturbing. I’m talking about her state of mind after calling her wedding off on the day of? My mom called and told me about it.
